The Various Versions of Self

The blob bridge is something I absolutely love! I use it for myself and with clients and students. I came across it last year during a life coaching course and found it fascinating. For me, it’s intriguing because I don’t see the blobs as different people but as different versions of myself. Throughout our lives, we play out multiple versions of ourselves, and I can definitely relate to different blobs. For instance, I can say I was the blob hanging off the bridge when I was experiencing a challenging scenario in my life. I can also relate to the blobs on the right, the happy blobs just after achieving their goals. I can relate to each and every one of those blobs.

So, what do these blobs have to do with formulating fitness?

Everything!

Formulating fitness is about living the best physical life you can, being pain-free, moving more, exercising, and eating for body composition goals. Those blobs can help you get there.

If you are not living your best physical life right now, ask yourself why, then relate that why to your preferred blob. Currently, I’m not living my best physical life because I have a labral tear in my shoulder that flares up occasionally and is currently bothering me a lot. I am the blob walking across the bridge railing. I am that blob because I know I have an issue, I feel the pain, I’ve had it checked out, but I’m also overworking it with hard gym training—basically doing exactly what I know I shouldn’t be doing!

Next, look at the blob you want to be. The blob I want to be is the one running towards the end of the bridge. If I am that blob, my pain is gone—not forever, but I know I have control over it at this given time.

Once you’ve set your intentions, ask yourself how to get from being one blob to becoming the other. You will have the answer; we always have the answers. For me, I know I must lay off the heavy lifting and focus more on light movement and graded exposure exercises until the pain subsides.

I am very aware that my above example is straightforward and that life is not. However, I do think the blobs are a fantastic tool to get anyone started towards any goal they would like to achieve and highly recommend giving it a go.

  1. Choose the area of your life you’re not satisfied with.
  2. Correlate it with a blob.
  3. Choose the blob you would like to be and correlate that with an idea of what it would feel like to be at that desired goal.
  4. Ask yourself what you can do right now to set you towards becoming that goal. You might come up with one thing or a list—one is all you need.
  5. Act! It doesn’t matter how big or small the action is; the action itself sets the intention that the goal is achievable. Repeat…
