What is Neuromuscular Therapy?
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a comprehensive approach to identifying and treating body pain and dysfunction. It focuses on addressing myofascial trigger points through various soft tissue techniques such as soft tissue release, strain-counterstrain, positional release, MET (muscle energy technique), INIT (integration neuromuscular inhibition techniques), and massage.
These techniques aim to restore neurological connections between the brain and body. The brain responds to information from nerve endings and receptors by instructing joints, ligaments, and muscles. Changes in nerve patterns can cause muscles to become overactive, underactive, or fire incorrectly, leading to pain. NMT seeks to correct these patterns and reduce discomfort.
What is the Pro Sport Academy?
The Pro Sport Academy, established by Irish physiotherapist Dave O’Sullivan, offers a unique assessment and treatment method for both clinic and pitchside. As a member, I have integrated this approach with my knowledge of neuromuscular therapy, anatomy, and strength conditioning. This combination allows me to treat clients effectively while educating them about the treatment process. As a lifelong member, I continually update my skills to provide the best possible service.
How does Neuromuscular Therapy differ from Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is closely associated with hospital settings and often addresses respiratory and cardiac conditions, such as chronic COPD in patients on respirators. In contrast, Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) primarily focuses on neuromuscular issues resulting from acute or chronic trauma.
When choosing a therapist, select one who aligns with your specific goals. Discuss your objectives with the therapist before committing your time and money. Allow the therapist sufficient time to help you achieve these goals, and trust that they will refer you to another treatment if it is deemed necessary.
What conditions can Neuromuscular Therapy treat?
Neuromuscular therapy can treat both acute (newly occurring) and chronic (long term injuries). Below are some examples of issue which clients present with, this list is not exclusive
Achilles Tendonitis
Accident Injuries
Ankle Sprain
Arthritis
Back Pain
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What Can I expect in a session?
During a neuromuscular therapy session, we will start with a subjective assessment where I will discuss your pain and gather information about its possible causes. Next, I will conduct various assessments. If your issue is acute and trauma-specific, such as a sports injury, I may perform specific pathology tests like the Lachman’s test for knee injuries. If not, I will carry out objective assessments to evaluate your movement capacity, range of motion, and muscle strength.
Based on these assessments, I will proceed with a range of treatments which may include general massage, soft tissue release, positional release, trigger point release, and MET (muscle energy technique), Treatments combine table work and exercises to restore muscle function.
After the treatment, I will provide a summary of my findings and the treatment performed. If any aftercare exercises are recommended, I will have you practice these in the clinic also.
What do I wear?
Ideally loose clothes such as a t-shirt and shorts. Jeans are best avoided if possible. As with current covid 19 protocols, I avoid using towels in the clinic and so removal of jeans is not possible. .
